This course is a comprehensive and indispensable training course for furnace thermographers and people who want to know how a furnace works inside. We teach each subject on exactly the level that it is needed for the application. The subjects of heat transfer and infrared theory are taught on a very high level, since those subjects are essential for the understanding of this application.
If you have previous training, or plan to take a generic thermography course, it is also very useful for understanding this application and others, such as electrical or mechanical. But the furnace tube course is not only sufficient for the furnace thermographer, but absolutely essential as well. | Course Outline: - Camera handling, General advice, not camera specific.
- Operation of the camera(s) the students use.
- Understanding the IR image. Covers the principles of the IR image and set the stage for understanding thermal patterns and temperature measurement.
- Heat transfer theory. This chapter explains in detail how the heat flows into and out of the furnace, and into the process fluid itself. An important part is the concept of heat flux and thermal resistivity - key points in order to understand efficiency issues, for example, and for doing calculations.
- Infrared theory. This chapter covers some of the theory typically taught in generic thermography courses, but in some ways it is much simpler, and in other ways it goes far beyond what basic courses do, particularly when it comes to the special spectral filtering that is used in IR cameras for furnace use.
- Evaluating what you see. In this chapter the typical anomalies that exist in furnaces are explained with examples. Then we look at a large number of example images and evaluate and discuss them.
Certification

The course is intended to provide the knowledge and skills you need as a thermographer to provide PURPOSE and STRUCTURE to your infrared program. It will show you a multitude of applications for thermography in industry, mainly within Electrical, Mechanical and Process / Fluid flow. The course will teach you how to organize your thermography program and manage the documentation setup and process. During the course we will choose one application that you will work yourselves through in a group project. The application we choose depends on availability of equipment to practice on. You will work in groups of 2-4 people and create the documentation system from the beginning, until the final report, including the survey. The infrared camera by itself has no intrinsic value at all for your company. It is when you apply it to certain problems or issues that it becomes useful. You probably had some idea of what to use the infrared camera for when you first bought it. On this training course you will learn more! Since the number of applications is more or less endless, we could not possibly cover everything. But we will make a systematic overview of the electrical, mechanical, and process/fluid flow applications that are common in the industrial area. This will definitely give you inspiration to expand your program. | Course Outline: - Explore Infrared thermography application in Industry and Utility
- Principle to define severity criteria for your application
- Customize your report template to your application
- Baseline and trending your thermography results
- Field and reporting practice

The Level I Infrared Thermography Training Course is geared to the new infrared camera user and focuses on its use for a variety of condition monitoring / predictive maintenance applications. Attendees completing all training course requirements will receive a Level I Infrared Thermography Certification. | Course Benefits:
Introduction to thermal imaging and measurement systems for predictive maintenance applications. No experience in thermography is necessary! Collect quality data, accurate temperature readings, and account for measurement effects such as distance and emissivity using infrared cameras. Interpret thermograms and make informed decisions using heat transfer concepts to analyze thermal images, and see the latest in infrared inspection report generation and database software. Avoid costly mistakes – learn to distinguish between hot spots and reflections, direct vs. indirect readings and qualitative vs. quantitative thermography. Challenge yourself with field applications labs that closely simulate real-world infrared applications. | Course Outline: - Introduction
- Infrared Thermography Applications Overview
- Basic Camera Setup and Operation
- Thermal Science Fundamentals
- Heat Transfer
- Fundamental of Infrared Science
- Thermal Measurement
- Electrical Applications
- Thermography Safety
- Mechanical Applications
- Building Applications
- Review
- Final Exam
